A Safer, More Compassionate Approach:
Why We’re Adopting Ukeru

At Serendipity Center, our mission is to provide a safe, nurturing environment where students can heal, learn, and grow. We are dedicated to delivering person-centered care, using best practices in behavioral healthcare, and continuously improving our approach. As part of this commitment, we are excited to introduce Ukeru, a trauma-informed, restraint-free crisis management system, to our organization.

Comfort Instead of Control

We believe that all intervention — both educational and behavioral — should prioritize comfort over control. Every individual, regardless of cultural background or disability, deserves to be valued and treated with respect. Ukeru provides a proven, trauma-informed approach that helps staff create an environment of trust and de-escalation while ensuring safety for all. By implementing Ukeru, we will focus on both conceptual training and physical techniques that offer a safe, non-restrictive alternative to traditional crisis management strategies.

What Ukeru Training Includes

Our staff will receive comprehensive training on:

•  Verbal and nonverbal communication strategies
•  Managing and de-escalating conflict by converting or diverting aggression
•  Creating an environment focused on comfort instead of control
•  Recognizing traumatic experiences of individuals with developmental, behavioral, and mental health needs
•  Protective physical techniques, including releases, Ukeru blocking, and redirection to minimize risk

Proven Benefits of Ukeru

At its core, Ukeru is about treating those who depend on us the way we would want to be treated. Ukeru is already being used successfully in schools, behavioral health organizations, and mental health settings across the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Brazil. Its impact has been profound and measurable, including:

•  Reduction of restrictive practices – Restraints have been reduced by over 99% in some organizations
•  Elimination of seclusion – Over a decade without seclusion at Grafton Integrated Health Network
•  Lower risk of injuries – Fewer injuries for both individuals and staff, creating a safer and more supportive environment
•  Improved staff retention – A safer, more respectful workplace leads to higher employee satisfaction
•  Better outcomes for students – Increased goal mastery rates and stronger relationships between staff and students

Looking Ahead

At Serendipity Center, we are always evolving to meet the needs of our students, families, and communities. Implementing Ukeru is another step forward in ensuring a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where students can thrive.
We are excited to provide this additional support to both students and staff and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will bring to our school community.
