Giving that Grows: The Gitners <3 Serendipity
Introduced to Serendipity through family, Karen Rash-Gitner and Gary Gitner were inspired to get involved. Today, their generosity and volunteer spirit are felt across campus and in the garden.
Although Karen and Gary are relatively new to the Serendipity Center community, their impact has already taken strong root. With a family member on staff, they were introduced to Serendipity’s mission and quickly found purposeful ways to contribute — both through thoughtful giving and hands-on support.

One of the ways they chose to give back was by making a charitable gift directly from their individual retirement accounts (IRA). Karen and Gary were able to fulfill their required minimum distributions while supporting a cause that deeply resonates with them. This method of giving not only offers tax benefits but also helps support the critical work happening every day on campus.
Their generosity doesn’t stop there. Karen and Gary are now regular volunteers in the Growing Minds Garden. Whether they’re weeding, planting, or harvesting, the Gitners bring more than just help. Their presence brings warmth, connection, and care to a space that is deeply meaningful to the students who learn and heal there.
Karen shared, “Through our Serendipity staff connection, we were drawn to this therapeutic community. Our youngest son’s journey to adulthood would have been less challenging and more successful if he’d had access to the opportunities for healing and learning offered at Serendipity. When we turned 73 and had to allot our Required Minimum Distribution, it felt like the right donation to give.”
We are incredibly grateful to the Gitners for all the ways they give back. Their impact is felt across the garden and beyond.
