Serendipity Hosts 2018 Youth Opportunity Breakfast: Trauma-Informed Care in Schools

The 2018 Youth Opportunity Breakfast is A complimentary and informational event hosted by Serendipity Center designed to shape the conversation of therapeutic education in the state of Oregon. This complimentary event is our forum for engaging our peers in the educational field and interested community members in discussion intended to build understanding and support for all children challenged by disability and/or trauma.

The goals of Serendipity’s annual YO Breakfast are to:

  • Remove shame
  • Rebuild hope
  • Reduce isolation by connecting youth with an empathetic community
WHEN: Thursday, January 25 from 7:30-9:00 a.m.
WHERE: Bridgeport BrewPub
COST: None

At Serendipity Center, we understand the impacts of trauma on the development, learning, and response to treatment in our students and in all children affected by trauma. We believe that the purpose of Trauma-Informed Care is to promote resiliency, health and wellness for those who have experienced trauma, and to create a minimum standard of care in addressing the impact of trauma. The simple shift from asking “What is wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” can have significant benefits in promoting a trauma-informed treatment milieu.

Schools, like all child serving organizing, must cultivate capacity to treat survivors of trauma with insight and skill if long-term risks to our community are to be lessened. Delivering care that is trauma-informed requires a mindset that permeates all practices, and focuses on trust, safety and the development of relationships that are healthy and predictable. Using this approach, we believe in resilience and in the ability of individuals, organizations, and communities to heal and promote recovery from trauma. We recognize that everyone has a role to play.
