Serendipity is undertaking a vitally needed $2.2 million remodel and campus expansion.
Major components of the remodel include the creation of a Therapeutic High School building through the conversion of current administrative space. The high school building will offer specially designed classrooms, in-room intervention space, and practical life teaching environments. A 2300 square foot ‘connector’ building will house administrative and clinical services. Installing a playground equipped with developmentally and neurologically appropriate play structures will create needed outdoor play space.
This capital project will address several needs within Serendipity. Currently our high school students, who comprise about half of our enrollment, are located in the same school building as our elementary and middle school students. The space is developmentally appropriate for younger children and is too small to serve our growing enrollment. In addition, the kind of space required to implement our programs has changed as our children’s needs have changed. Students with autism related disorders have increased from 3% to 13% of our population, resulting in the need for specially adapted space. Many of our young people need daily alternatives to classroom work, such as therapy or individualized skills training. A life skills curriculum is key to helping us prepare youth for independent living and employment readiness.
