Serendipity Center is a therapeutic school program that provides a unique blending of special education and mental health services into its school day.
Typically, students come to us with histories of educational, behavioral, and psychiatric problems in their previous school placements. Difficulties such as academic skill deficits, poor social skill development, anger and aggression problems, and family issues, are just some of the challenges our children face. At Serendipity Center these students can finally realize a positive and successful school experience. Throughout the day, positive role modeling, social skill development, and problem solving are woven into the academic learning. By integrating educational services with mental health support, our school program provides our students with the best chance of preparing for successful lives.
In the same way that success is defined individually for each student, so is the work to be accomplished. Many of our students qualify for special education, so their efforts are focused on the goals established in their Individual Education Plans. For students not working on an IEP, goals are created in collaboration with the student, his/her family, and the team of providers. These goals target academic, behavioral, social, and/or vocational improvement to be accomplished during the student’s time at Serendipity. By offering work experience opportunities on campus, volunteer experiences off campus, and credit for employment activities, Serendipity seeks to maintain awareness that preparation for successful participation in the larger community is within the grasp of every young person.
Serendipity serves between 200 and 250 students annually. All of our students are gaining readiness to take their next steps in life. For some, their goal is a return to a public school setting. By developing the abilities to manage frustration, maintain relationships, and demonstrate sound academic work habits, many of our students will return to their home schools. In our high school programs, the majority of students will graduate from Serendipity. As an accredited school, Serendipity awards credits towards both modified and standard diplomas. Next steps for these students are often entrance to a community college, a vocational training program, and independent living. Whatever their direction, Serendipity believes in the potential of our students to be dependable citizens and contributing community members.
