Volunteers play an integral role in helping Serendipity Center to achieve its mission to provide a safe place for vulnerable high-risk children where they can acquire the skills necessary to contribute successfully to their communities.  The generous participation of these caring and dedicated individuals enriches the lives of the children we serve in tremendous ways.

Serendipity is looking for volunteers in the following areas:

Computer Instructor:

  • Plans and provides instruction on computer hardware and software to students.

  • Works with students to impart basic computer safety and maintenance information.

  • Assists students with computers problems and projects.

Kitchen Helper:

  • Assists in the preparation and serving of meals and snacks.
  • Washes dishes, pots, pans, and trays.
  • Cleans and sanitizes work surfaces, equipment and refrigerators.
  • Launders kitchen materials as needed.
  • Sort recyclables.

 

Reading Buddy:

  • Working one-on-one with a student either reading to him/her or helping the student learn to read.

  • Reading to a group of students during the classroom’s story time.

Mentor:

  • Be a positive role model to students aged, 6 to 21 years.

  • Meet regularly with students to read, to encourage career exploration, and to provide invaluable encouragement and exposure to the larger community.

Library:

  • To organize book shelves.

  • Re-shelve returned library books.

  • Cataloguing and collection management.

Enrichment Opportunities:

Our students need opportunities to experience art, music, dance, crafts, chess, cooking, foreign languages, photography, etc.  Volunteers can help facilitate a one-time learning experience or a weekly enrichment group that explores almost any area of interest.

Our Children’s Store:

  • Volunteer in a retail gift store environment where all of the proceeds benefit local children’s charities (the store is open from October to January each year).

  • Year round behind-the-scenes opportunities also available, including merchandising, purchasing products, raffle tickets, etc.

 

Advisory Committee Members:

Serendipity currently has three advisory committees recruiting the expertise and participation of community members.

  • Marketing Committee helps build our connections to individual and corporate contacts with interest in our work.

  • Resource Advisory Committee plans and promotes the annual special events.

  • Capital Committee is planning a campus remodel project, The Building for Success.

Board of Directors:

Serendipity’s Board of Directors is actively recruiting new members to provide the guidance and leadership needed to implement our initiatives and fulfill our mission.

Serendipity Center is both an accredited school and a certified mental health agency.
